What is the Keratoconus Disease?

The front layer of the eye ball is composed by a transparent layer which is called the cornea. The cornea layer is the most important optical element that allows us to see the objects clearly and that determines the refraction degree of the eye. Normally, cornea shows a certain level of convexity. In keratoconus patients, the cornea swells outwardly. To say, the cornea leans frontward. As a inborn characteristic, the increase of cornea convexity causes astigmatic in keratoconus patients. Since the astigmatic in these group of patients is not symmetrical in the lower and upper scale of the cornea layer and the astigmatic can not be corrected with contact lens or glasses, this problem may affect the visual quality in a high degree and may reduce the quality of the life.


Increasing sensitivity to the light, double vision, glare, seeing rings around the lights, appearance of ghost visions especially when driving, irritation and rubor can be listed as the main complaints. Since the keratoconus is a progressive disease this complaints tend to increase. In advanced ages, a permanent white stain will occur in the center of the cornea. In this period keratoplasty (cornea transplantation) is inevitable. The irregular astigmatic has a significant negative effect on the daily life of patients in earlier period. It is not possible to treat such kind of astigmatic with glasses. For this reason, keratoconus patients are thankful to the glasses which are repeatedly prescribed to them. Also, repeating contact lens trials can fail.


Implementing LASER surgery procedures like PRK, LASEK or LASIK to keratoconus patients would be a medical mistake. The cornea layer, which is already too weak, would be even more weakened by such surgical procedures, thus the disease would advance more rapidly. Therefore the sight would decrease more rapidly.
